October and November Board Meeting and Planning Meeting Highlights

General Reminder:

  • These are my personal takeaways from recent meetings.

  • For complete and official details, refer to the minutes and agendas or, better yet, join us at a meeting to experience the discussions firsthand.

  • I am here to serve you and am always striving to learn as much as possible to make the best decisions for our community. Your stories and insights are invaluable to me—please don’t hesitate to reach out and share them. Together, we can continue to grow and improve.

Upcoming Meeting: November 25, 2024

  • An Election Recap is on the agenda.

  • We’ll welcome two new Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) alternates.

  • The Fire Department is looking to hire two new on-call firefighters.

  • Review of Cannon Township Purchasing Policy Updates, including proposed adjustments for 2025.

November 12 Planning Commission Meeting Recap

  • October Meeting: No meeting was held because there was no new business.

  • September Minutes: Accidentally omitted from the November packet; these will be approved at the December 10 meeting.

  • Rezoning Request: 7150 Belding Road

    • A rezoning request was made to change from RR to R-1 for a proposed development called Bella Woods (61 homes).

    • Biggest concerns raised by residents and PC (both in-person and via email):

      • Safety along Belding Road with 61 homes with main point of entry/exit on Belding.

    • After a lot of discussion, the Planning Commission ultimately denied the request.

    • Eastbrook Homes (represented by Mike McGraw and Kelly Kuiper) provided a detailed presentation, including a sample site plan.

    • Next Steps:

      • The Board will make the final decision, likely during December's meeting (not on the November 25 agenda).

      • Public Hearing: Not required at the Board level for R-1 rezoning (it would be required for a PUD request).

    • If this development is important to you—whether you support or oppose it—please let your elected officials know so we can represent you effectively.

  • Sewer System Report:

    • Kevin Gritters provided an update:

      • Current capacity is sufficient, with no immediate concerns about flow conditions.

      • However, it’s difficult to estimate capacity for additional homes, we just have to keep paying attention.

    • The report begins on Page 30 of the meeting packet.
