New Column Alert: Slay(don) Style

This was published Oct 31 in the Rockford Squire.

Welcome to my new column in The Rockford Squire, where I'll share slices of life from our vibrant North Kent community. As a longtime resident and active participant in local governance and business, I aim to bring you stories that resonate with the heart of our town. From family adventures and community updates to personal anecdotes, this column celebrates our shared experiences and the joys of small-town living. Join me as we explore what makes our community a wonderful place to live, work, and play.

I've always had a special fondness for The Squire—the last of our local newspapers. There's something uniquely satisfying about holding a physical newspaper, especially while sipping a cup of Herman’s Boy coffee.

On Thursdays, I can’t wait to pick up my copy to discover what local news awaits. Will I learn a new tidbit of Rockford history, get an update from Beth on the Rockford City Commission meetings, or read an inspiring message from various local churches? I also secretly love to check if any of my stories have made it to print—many of which have.

Writing gives me such a rush; I find I can't do anything else until I get the words out. It's always been something I've enjoyed, despite needing to put in a lot of practice. As a teenager, I imagined myself as a Midwestern Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex and the City," sharing about life—not about shoes (though, who am I kidding, I love to talk about shoes too!). So I’m very excited for this new venture!

I am deeply connected to our community and excited to share what it's like living here in 2024 with a young family. My husband Jake and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary on September 29, and we have three wonderful boys aged 10, 8, and 2. This new column will be filled with community happenings, fun things to do, and lessons I’ve learned—all aimed at building up our community and inspiring others.

I am a third-generation family member and the first female President of our family business, Swift Printing, located in Grand Rapids, and I also serve as a Cannon Township Trustee.

As for hobbies, you'll just have to follow along with this new column. I hope you enjoy it, and if you have any suggestions, feedback, or events to attend, please shoot me an email at jes@swiftprinting.com or give me a call at (616) 915-5370.
