Oh - how I love to sing!

Slay(don) Style

I recently did something that pushed me out of my comfort zone: I joined the worship team at Bridgeway Community Church, led by Charles Walker. It all started with a comment after a service—I told one of the singers they had incredible breath support, especially for 9 a.m.! (In hindsight, I realize that’s such a singer-specific compliment.) Next thing I know, I’m trying out and joining the band.
Singing is something I love to do, and it brings me so much joy. I sing with the Bridge Street Band and love to sing our Star-Spangled Banner, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been on a worship team. For a while, I thought I had to be perfect—not just with my voice but in my faith as well. Boy, was I wrong! It’s kind of funny how we limit ourselves for made-up reasons.
The Bridgeway worship team has been welcoming, encouraging, and so much fun. They even told me to “keep turning it up” when I often feel like the world says, “tone it down.” Bopping around on stage, I truly felt like I belonged, and I can’t wait to be back on the platform.
What’s something you’re being called to do that you’re hesitant to begin? Is it cutting back on sugar, getting up 30 minutes earlier to stretch or practice mindfulness, or even saying “no” to making a holiday dish so you can practice something else? Whatever it is, don’t underestimate yourself. You can do anything—you just have to start. I believe in you!
