Reflecting on Six Months as a Cannon Township Trustee: Learning, Engagement, and Vision
Six months have flown by since I became a Trustee for Cannon Township, and what a journey it has been! Our board consists of four trustees, treasurer, clerk and supervisor, all deeply committed to the welfare and long-term planning of our community. We strive to balance development while maintaining our township's unique character, which certainly requires finesse.
My journey began in 2020 when I asked our then-clerk how it worked to run for office. She was patient and kind with me and answered all my questions. My curiosity about local government roles was piqued, which led me to explore further opportunities. But then I convinced Jake to have another baby! haha
When a Trustee spot opened in 2022, I wasn’t appointed initially but was encouraged by Supervisor Grimm to join the Zoning Board of Appeals as an alternate and then the Planning Commission. This involvement set the stage for my eventual appointment as a Trustee, proving my dedication to our township.
My role has allowed me to delve into the complexities of local government. I love tackling problems, answering resident questions, and truly making a difference in our community.
Outside of board meetings, I have engaged in extensive training to enhance my understanding and effectiveness in my role. I took the MSU extension course on zoning and planning, called Citizen Planner Online and am currently working towards completing the four-year Michigan Township Association’s Township Governance Academy. I was also just asked to apply for the Michigan Political Leadership Program. Which is a 10 month long course that really dive’s deep into government and planning.
I facilitate the Communicator, our township quarterly publication. (Heads up: You will receive your next issue right around Halloween.) I help the office with social media and am the liaison for our office and the company that does our website. I also serve on the Invasive Species and Wetlands Committee and chaired the Youth, Summer Lingo, Bingo initiative under Cy Balk’s leadership. I am also on the Grand Rapids Metro Council Transportation Committee.
One of the best parts of my role has been the opportunity to connect with the community through various channels, including my blog on township happenings. Writing not only helps me process where I stand on issues but also serves as a record of my contributions and perspectives. The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, showing a clear appreciation for the insights shared through my updates. (Thank you!)
As I reflect on these past six months and look to the future, my commitment to serving Cannon Township remains steadfast. I’m excited about the ideas we have for the (possible) next term.
Running into fellow community members like Bill McGee at local events, such as ArtPrize, reminds me of the strong connections and shared experiences that enrich our lives here. Serving as a Trustee has not only opened doors to new learning opportunities but has also deepened my appreciation for what it means to bring people together.
For me, being a Trustee is more than a role—it's a way to actively contribute to and shape the community I love. I am here to serve, to bring people together, and to ensure that our township not only grows but thrives. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and here's to (hopefully) many more months of making a difference together!
Cheers to us—it truly takes a community to make a community.

P.S. Also, special thanks to my neighbors on Bostwick Lake for being so supportive and hosting a parade of signs along Kitson Dr. You are the best!
